It seemed ages ago that you first saw your spouse at a local party. The love between the two of you was instantaneous. You soon exchanged rings, and it seemed it would last forever. Now that day seems a distant memory as you fight the one you once loved for custody of your children.

The law states that the best interests of the child/children remain the focal point when determining which parent should be awarded custody of the child/children. The court will determine the rights and duties of each parent based on the best interest of the child/children involved.

It is important that you use this time to evaluate yourself as a parent. Why do you want to obtain sole custody of your child/children? Is your true motive for pursuing custody of your child/children revenge on your ex-spouse? If this is your motivation then you are pursuing custody for the wrong reason. If you feel that you are the better parent, then you are on the right track. You may choose to use this time as an opportunity to improve your parenting skills. In this manner you are improving your relationship with your child/children.

It is important that you remember that each of your children are unique. Be sure to paint a picture of each of your children in an individual light to your attorney. Allow your attorney to be familiar with the type of relationship your child/children has with both you and your ex-spouse.
